Swimming Pool Suction Leaf Canisters & Traps
For some pool owners, leaves are the bane of their existence. Because their pools are directly underneath a tree (or multiple trees), leaves tend to fall in regularly. But there is a better way, andPool Supply Unlimited has you covered. In addition to
leaf skimmers, we also offer a selection of in-line leaf canisters to help you rest easily during the swimming season.
What is a Pool Leaf Canister?
One of the best ways to clean your pool is to use an automated vacuuming system. Unfortunately, if the vacuum sucks up too many leaves, the line can get clogged, forcing you to remove the obstruction.
Thankfully, you can get around this problem with a pool leaf canister. This device installs inside your hose and traps leaves in a basket, allowing water to flow through unimpeded. Then, once the basket gets full, you can just dump it out and replace it rather than unclog the hose.
Benefits of Installing a Leaf Canister
If leaves are a constant nuisance for your pool, it's not easy to remove them manually. While a skimmer can help you with those floating on the water's surface, it's much harder to get them off the bottom of the pool, even with a leaf rake. Instead, letting your vacuum do the work allows you to keep a cleaner pool with much less hassle.
A canister also comes in handy if you're vacuuming the pool manually. Now, you can focus your attention on clumps of leaves and not have to worry about clogging or ruining the hose in the process.
Do I Need a Pool Leaf Canister If I Have a Skimmer?
If your pool collects a lot of leaves, a canister system is often preferable to using a manual skimmer. However, if you don't get that many leaves in your pool, a skimmer might be sufficient. Overall, you have to weigh the pros and cons of letting the canister collect the leaves while vacuuming or whether you want to get them yourself.
How to Install a Leaf Canister
Thankfully, installing a leaf canister is relatively simple, and virtually all models follow the same instructions. It's typically best to put the canister closer to the pool wall rather than the suction head. Because the canister can get heavy with water and leaves, it can affect the head's ability to move around and maintain suction against the liner.
Here are the basic steps to installing a leaf canister, but refer to the instructions provided by the manufacturer for specific details. These steps are for after you've set up your vacuum system and got it working properly.
-
First, turn the pool filter off.
- Next, disconnect the hose between the first and second sections, starting from the wall (not the suction head). Note, if you have a continuous hose, you cannot install a leaf canister.
- Put the male end of the second hose section on the intake port of the canister. This is often at the top of the device, but some canisters have intake and exit valves on either side.
- Submerge the canister to remove any excess air so it doesn't affect the vacuum's suction.
- Attach the female end of the first hose section to the exit valve, which is often on the bottom of the canister. Do this underwater to prevent air from getting into the hose.
- Turn the filter back on to remove any excess air. Check to make sure the canister is working correctly.
Whether you want a leaf canister to handle the dirty work for you or a pool skimmer to collect leaves yourself, Pool Supply Unlimited has everything you need. Your pool will stay in pristine shape all year round, thanks to our pool chemicals, pool equipment, and other pool supplies.
