How do you know if batteries need to be replaced and can you?

BEST ANSWER: Batteries in unit are non-replaceable, and non-user-serviceable.
To charge the batteries, place the
product in direct sun light for 6-8 hours

How do you know when it is on during the day?

BEST ANSWER: I don't believe it needs to be "on" to charge. It has a photocell built in so that it only lights at night. It has to be pretty dark for mine to come on. I suppose you could take it inside a closet, close the door and wait a few moments for the photocell to react to the darkness to determine which position the pushbutton on-off switch is in. Once you have determined that it is "on", you can leave it in that position forever and it will come on at night, run until the battery dies and then re-charge tomorrow for a new cycle.
