when should the cartridges be replaced?

BEST ANSWER: I don't know that there is a "hard & fast" rule for replacing the cartridges. I keep an eye on the pressure gauge and when it start climbing above 18-20#s, I disassemble the filter and wash the cartridges with a garden hose & nozzle gun. Making sure that I get between the folds of the elements. Takes about an hour to clean the 4 cartridges. Inspect them for any physical damage and/or remaining dirt, debris, etc. If they still are not clean, then I will replace them.
Based upon my individual pool, I replace the cartridges every other year.
