Flow Meters
A pool flow meter is a device used to measure the speed of the
pool water flowing through the system. Flow meters are more commonly used in
commercial pools to help ensure minimum flow requirements are met. The speed is
measured by gallons per minute and calculated by the following formula:
Pool Volume ÷ 6 ÷ 60 = Minimum
Flow (GPM)
The “6” represents the number of hours it should take for the
pool water to push completely through your filtration system. Six is also the
threshold used by many health departments for how many hours it should take for
your water to completely turn over. To get the most accurate read, install your
pool flow meter after the heater and sanitation feed system, if possible. As
always, we recommend checking with your local health department for minimum
flow requirements in your area.
Skimmers
Pool skimmers are one of the most essential pool plumbing supplies
your pool has. The job of the pool skimmer is to draw water from the surface
and pass it through to the filtration system, removing debris that may be
floating on the water’s surface. Without a skimmer, debris will not be properly
removed from your pool, increasing the chance for bacteria and algae to grow. A
poorly running pool skimmer can also cause unnecessary wear and tear to your
pool pump. Pool Supply Unlimited carries a variety of pool skimmers, skimmer
lids, and pool plumbing kits to best fit your needs.
Return Fittings
Return fittings are pool PVC fittings located on the inside of
your pool. These pool fittings serve two purposes. The first purpose of pool
PVC fittings is to draw water from the filtration system back into the pool.
The second is to push water around the pool. This also helps move debris
sitting on the surface of the water to the skimmer. For best results, we
recommend adjusting your pool fittings away from the skimmer to create better
circulation around the pool.
Check Valves
A check valve is the part of your pool plumbing system in charge
of making sure water does not flow back into the pool plumbing system when the
pump is turned off. There are two types of check valves, spring flapper and
spring check valve. A spring flapper check valve consists of a flap on one end
of the valve that pivots up against a light spring when water is flowing from
the pump. It's then resealed down to shut off any opposite flow when the pump
is off. The spring check valve consists of an internal panel that moves against
a light spring to open and shut the valve. Pool Supply Unlimited has both
spring check valves and spring flapper check valves for you to choose from.
