How Do Pool Filter Cartridges Work?
Pool filter cartridges work as part of a larger pool filter system
. The job of a cartridge filter is to strip unwanted particles, oils and debris from your pool water. Keeping your pool filter cartridge clean not only helps keep your pool water clean, but helps keep the cartridge filter working efficiently for years. On average, your pool filter cartridge should last you 3-5 years, depending on the demand placed on it.
When & How to Clean Your Pool Filter Cartridge
Pool filter cartridges should be cleaned on average, every six months, or when your filter pressure gauge has increased about 8 to 12 PSI above the recommended starting pressure of your pool filter.
To clean your pool filter cartridge, you’ll want to first turn off the filtration system and remove your pool filter cartridge. Remove any large dirt or debris, then clean the pool filter cartridge with the necessary filter cleaning accessories
, checking for tears, cracks or damage each time. After you’ve successfully cleaned your pool filter cartridge, allow it to fully dry before inserting it back into the filter tank. If waiting for your filter to dry isn’t an option, consider keeping a pool filter cartridge replacement on hand, this way you’ll always have a clean, dry cartridge to use right away. If your pool filter cartridge is damaged, we recommend replacing it, as a damaged filter can affect the overall performance of your filter and subsequently how clean your pool is.
D.E. Filter Grid Replacements
If you have a Diatomaceous Earth (D.E) filter you’ll eventually find yourself needing a D.E. filter grid or cartridge replacement. When water passes over the filter grids, the D.E. coated grid or filter captures tiny contaminants as small as five microns (compare this to a grain of sand which is 1,000 microns!). D.E grid and filters last, on average, upwards of 5 or more years before they need replacing. As with pool filter cartridges, damaged D.E. grids or filters should be replaced.. We recommend cleaning your D.E. filter at least once every month, or when your D.E. filter reaches 8-10 PSI higher than the recommended starting pressure.
