When Are Pool Handrails & Ladders Required?
The ADA requires that pool handrails be made available on both sides of sloped entries into pools, with the exception of wading pools. Handrails must be a minimum of 33” and a maximum of 38” apart from one another. Pool steps must be accompanied by handrails sitting at a minimum of 20” and a maximum of 24” apart in order to appropriately support disabled yet ambulatory individuals. Handrail extensions are not required at the bottom of landing pool stairs, however a handrail height between 34” and 38” to the top of the gripping surface is required.
While pool ladders are always a great idea for any pool, pool safety requirements often vary between federal and individual state laws. We recommend checking your state laws for the most accurate pool safety regulations.
