Different Types of Pool Filters
Pool filters pull the water through filtration media to catch and trap any dirt, sediment, and other elements before pushing the clean water back into the pool. The actual materials used to filter out the water and trap dirt and sediment will vary, as will the mechanics of the pool filters themselves.
In some cases, your pool type or location will require a specific type of filter, and in other cases, you'll just want to decide on what's best for your needs. For instance, what’s best for a single-family home may not be what’s best for a large
commercial pool. To understand your choices when it comes to pool filters, it's good to first get a better understanding of how each filter type works.
Cartridge Filters
Cartridge pool filters work by passing water through a pleated cartridge, collecting unwanted dirt and debris while the newly cleaned water continues through to the pool. Cartridge pool filters can filter down to about 10 microns. Cleaning the internal cartridge is fairly simple, just take it out and rinse it off making sure to properly clean between the pleats before returning to the filter. Cartridge pool filters are recommended for public pools or pools in busy apartment complexes and hotels.
D.E Filters
Diatomaceous earth (D.E.) pool filters use diatomaceous earth to coat filter grids that collect dirt and sediment to give your pool the thorough cleaning it needs. D.E pool filters can filter down to about 5 microns, the lowest micron rating of any style pool filter, making them a great choice for the best water clarity. Like cartridges, the
D.E. filter grids inside your D.E. pool filter will eventually need to be replaced.
Sand Filters
Because of their simple, effective, and relatively low maintenance needs,
sand pool filters are one of the most popular swimming pool filter options available today. As pool water is routed through a sand-filled pressure vessel, dirt accumulates between sand particles. Sand pool filters are relatively low maintenance with sand only having to be replaced every few years, but do require “back-washing” to clean the filter. Sand pool filters are the least effective filter type, filtering about 20 microns at best.
