how does one get the lid off this filter?

BEST ANSWER: Under the twist ring of the middle are yellow levers to push UP with your fingers at the same time using your hands to twist COUNTER clockwise (to left when looking down). It is AWKWARD as the whole filter assembly does not secure to the (motor) base. I had to use my feet at the same time to hold the base of the filter as you press the tabs and turn the ring. Will help if you have a 2nd helper to hold either the base part OR the top part when trying this. In addition I used a RUBBER mallet to tap the LARGE ring at the handles when clearing the locking tabs to aid in movement to get the turning started.
Unlike the original filter assembly I had replace (it was 15 years old) the LARGE ring DOES NOT come off, this one stays connected to the TOP of the filter assembly.

BEST ANSWER: It will absolutely work. My 12x24 above ground oval is Crystal Clear ! It came with a sand filter, water was never clear . Hayward is the best, I have used they products in the last 3 pools I have had .

BEST ANSWER: No sand. The cartridge replaces the sand. I prefer cartridge over sand.
