Hayward EcoStar Variable Speed Pump | SP3400VSP
This item has been discontinued.
Hayward EcoStar variable-speed pool pumps provide best in class energy efficiency for most any pool and spa combination, including upgrading the majority of single speed models up to 3 horsepower (hp). Designed for medium to large pools, they can save up to 90% on energy costs or as much as $1500 per year, compared with single speed pool pumps.
EcoStar installs easily and works with a wide variety of equipment.
Customers can save significant time and money by installing EcoStar, because they don’t have to buy additional equipment or accessories. Its fully programmable, self-contained 24-hour time clock with up to eight custom speed and timer functions allows EcoStar to manage flow throughout the day. EcoStar can alternatively be controlled by Hayward controls such as OmniLogic, ProLogic, OnCommand, and E-Command 4, or other third-party pool and spa controls. Whether used in new construction or aftermarket applications, EcoStar is the perfect choice.
Quiet by design
Sunday afternoons and soft summer nights are never interrupted. EcoStar's variable-speed control ensures that the water flows at the rate needed, and because EcoStar's advanced hydraulic design moves water more efficiently, the motor can run at even lower speeds for incredibly quiet operation.
As friendly to users as it to the environment
EcoStar is extremely easy to use, even for a new pool owner. Its next-generation, integrated digital control interface is intuitive to operate and always easy to access, since it can be rotated in four different directions on the pump or removed and wall-mounted—a feature that's especially important if the pump sits in a tight space. EcoStar also provides on-board diagnostics and automatic protection against priming failures, temperature extremes and voltage fluctuations to ensure seamless operation.
A pump that creates a cleaner pool?
When operating at lower speeds, EcoStar moves pool and spa water more efficiently through the filter, removing more particulate and creating clearer water. For added convenience, a no-rib basket design ensures easy debris removal.
Features
Permanent magnet, totally enclosed fan cooled (TEFC) motor delivers maximum energy efficiency and reliability
Exceptionally quiet compared to single speed pumps
Fully programmable, touch pad control can be rotated to four different positions or mounted to the wall for more convenient access
Universal compatibility: operates independently, with Hayward automation, or with competitive systems (via relay control)
No-rib, extra- large basket design ensures easy leaf and debris removal and extends time between cleanings
We were nervous about purchasing a pool pump online, but have no fear, save your self some money and you have TONS of options. It was the best thing we could have done with very fast delivery. Overall happy with pump, great price compared to a pool store.
All of the negative reviews I have read about this product are of the older units.... I have not seen any negative reviews that have to do with newer, updated version. So far so good...very easy to use and is extremely quiet....
All speeds and timers function properly. except the wattage readout on the interface. This readout will become hung up and not change when the pump speed is changed, giving a false reading. This happens in frequently, but has been consistent enough. turning the power off to pump and back on will clear the problem.Hayward service will take look to see what is wrong On the good side, since replacing my single speed pump, my electric cost has decreased significantly.
This is our third SP3400VSP pump. We absolutely love it when it works, our utility bill is $50 to $100 less than our old single speed pump - but the pumps only seem to last 2 years or so. The controller sucks.
Install was very easy. Pump is quiet and efficient.
Replaced a 3450 RPM single speed 2HP pump. This one is running at 1750 RPM and pool circulation is great. Sufficient draw from skimmer and floor, and enough output to circulate and run in-floor cleaning jets.
I'm planning to test run it for a week at lower speeds to see if I can get sufficient filtering.
At 1750, pump display shows 308 watts, which is probably 1/3 of the electricity used by the previous pump.
Extremely pleased with this pump. Our install is not ideal with the pump at the top of the waterfall height instead of at the bottom of the pool height. This pump does better at priming and maintaining the flow of any pump that we've had so far, especially once we figured out what speed setting worked best. In addition, it has been very tolerant of running dry, which is important for us with our setup. Well worth the money, I'm glad we purchased.

BEST ANSWER:I am not an expert by any means however I have a 28,000 gallon in-ground pool with a 48 sq ft DE filter. I also have a waterfall feature flowing out of the spa into the pool. I have the two horse power variable speed and when the filter is clean and I'm running at 90% things run okay. If I had to do it all over again, I may go to a 2.5 or 3 HP.

Consulted a pool professional. Based on my 40,000 gal pool/spa combination he recommended a 3 hp pump inwhich I opted for the sp3400 based on its energy efficiency.
BEST ANSWER:I don't use the infloor cleaning. I used cleaning robot for my pool.
Since, it is a variable speed pump to save energy (electricity), it may not work with your infloor cleaning if you are using slow speed setting. If you want to use with the infloor cleaning (creepy crawler), then you might have to set this pump to high speed during cleaning period. I believe there is several setting you can program the pump and need read the manual or look on youtube. You can download the manual from Hayward.

What would cause the Ecostar Variable pump to stall and not be able to restart?

BEST ANSWER:my pump did that and i thought something was jamming it (it would try to turn but just locked) but it would spin freely by hand. i determined it was the motor drive electronics which is a common failure of these pumps from what i have read. i decided to replace the entire pump assy.

I had that happen when I went to restart my pump this season. In my case, the control board apparently got wet over the winter and it shorted on start-up. Had to replace board.
Will I still need a booster pump for sweep? If so, what booster pump?

BEST ANSWER:If you have a pressure side sweep, you will still need a booster pump. I use the Polaris PB4-60 and it has performed well helping my sweep keep the pool clean.
