Types of Pool Pumps
There are three types of
swimming pool pumps for you to choose from: single-speed, dual-speed, and
variable-speed pool pumps. Each type is available in above ground or inground
applications.
Single-Speed Pool Pumps
Single-speed pool pumps operate
with a motor spinning at one speed. When replacing a single-speed pool water
pump, it’s best to upgrade to a more efficient pool pump, at least a dual-speed
or variable-speed pool pump. If you’d like to stick with a single-speed pool pump, be
sure their use hasn’t been banned in your region or state, as they have in
Arizona and California.
Dual-Speed Pool Pumps

operate at two speeds: low and high. The lower speed uses less energy but may
not turn over your water as efficiently. The high speed, on the other hand,
will turn over your water more quickly but will resemble the speed of a
single-speed pool pump.
Variable-Speed Pool Pumps
Today, variable-speed pool
pumps are among the most popular swimming pool pumps, with many states,
counties, and municipalities requiring
variable-speed pool pumps in place of older pool pumps. Though they are more expensive up front, they are much more efficient
than other types of pool pumps, consuming less power and turning pool water
